1. Initial state

The Park of Rusovce far exceeds the area of Rusovce with its historical and natural value. It’s recreational and leisure potential is of an international significance. Just as an illustration – the plane trees growing in it have circumference of trunks from 300 to 400 cm; trees with trunk diameter of 180 cm are there as well. The surface area of the park is about 15 ha.

The Park of Rusovce is managed very poorly in the long term. Its owner is the Office of Government, which doesn’t invest enough money neither to the dominant of both the park and Rusovce – the Castle, nor to the park itself. Money provided by the owner is not sufficient for current state preservation, not to mention any progress, so the park is going to worse. The aim of the owner is to have the castle as a representative residence.

2. Project genesis

City district Bratislava-Rusovce is interested of having the park with its values preserved for people, and so it became the bearer of the activity of park reconstruction. However, the stimulus came from below – from the local civil association Natura Rusovce. Thanks to cooperation of this non-governmental and non-profit-making organization with the municipality, the project has a strong model value as well.

The project is being implemented by 4 subjects: City district Bratislava-Rusovce as the main project bearer, non-governmental organization Regional Environmental Center as the main coordinator and professional partner, civil association Natura Rusovce, and Austrian partner – municipality Bruck an der Leitha.

3. Project activities

The main result of the whole project will be The Study of reconstruction of the Park. This survey will be professional study defining park functions, natural factors such as park and plantation adaptations, and defining the space as a whole including technical elements. It will be visionary document defining how the park should look like in 10 or even 50 years. It will be created on the basis of ideas of the owner, professionals, the municipality and local public.

For achieving this goal, close dendrological evaluation of park potential and realization of basic professional trees treatment will be crucial.

The next project activity is the cross-border seminar with the main aim of coordination of parks renewal within the framework of planned international cross-border network of parks between Slovakia, Austria and Hungary.

The presentation of results achieved will be on this web page and in the intended booklet about the park and the process of its renewal.

4. What is innovative in the project

The project has two aspects, which can be considered as noticeably innovative in Slovakia. The first is a close cooperation of state administration (the owner), the municipality as the project bearer, and non-governmental organizations as main implementation and coordination bodies.

The second is the leading of the local public into the planning process – so called participative planning . Local citizens will have the possibility to define what the park should look like, to influence its functions and contents. This process will be supervised and controlled by professional designers and facilitators. Such a leading the public into the planning is unique also in Slovakia, so the model value in the case of project success will be far-reaching.
